Veteran filmmaker Yoji Yamada, who directed most of the Tora-san films, made his first post-Tora film about a bashful movie theater owner. Katsuo (Toshiyuki Nishida) runs the tumble-down Odeonza in rural Tokushima prefecture. Though the establishment isn't exactly raking in the profits, he does have a small but loyal clientele who visits every week as he shows classics by the like of Yasujiro Ozu and Keisuke Kinoshita. He is quietly in love with Yaeko (Yuko Tanaka), a fellow cinephile who owns a coffee shop called Casablanca, but he is too shy to tell her outright. Instead, the widowed Yaeko thinks of Katsuo as an older brother. Will the lovely film geek hero get the girl? ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
