The film stars Yasuko Matsuyuki as a newspaper reporter who receives a letter from a former lover and high school teacher named Katayama (Masahiro Takashima) inviting her to come back to Nagaoka, Niigata for the annual fireworks display and to watch a play about the war put on by his students. She decides to accept his offer, as the trip will give her the opportunity to have a look around Nagaoka, which recently took in many victims of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake.
When she arrives, she has many mysterious encounters with victims of both the earthquake and the air raid of August 1945. Her journey transcends time as she experiences events from Nagaoka’s past, present, and future.
