Seishū Handa is a pro calligrapher at such a young age. After his calligraphy was criticized due to being similar to ones on copybook by the gallery director, he gets angry and punches the director, leaving a bad impression of himself. His father tells him to cool himself down by moving to a remote island in Kyushu, Gotō Island. There, he meets the various type of villagers, interacts with them, and begins to learn.
Barakamon (ばらかもん) is a Japanese manga series written by Satsuki Yoshino. The story follows Seishū Handa, a calligrapher who moves to the remote Gotō Islands off the western coast of Kyushu, and his various interactions with the people of the island.
Square Enix has released seven volumes, with an eighth to be released in September 2013. A spin-off manga, titled Handa-kun, will start serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine. An anime adaptation has been announced. In February 2014, Yen Press announced they had licensed Barakamon for English release in North America.
