Host Jeff Probst introduces us to this year's gimmick: The three tribes are divided into "brains," "beauty" and "brawn"
Jeff explains the division of the tribes to the players. Morgan is asked to guess which tribe she's on, and she guesses "beauty." Tony of the "brawn" tribe says they're "gonna stomp on beauty and we're gonna stomp on brains." Jeff asks each tribe to choose a leader.
L.J. gets selected quickly on his "beauty" tribe. Sarah is named leader of the "brawn" tribe. David, wearing a blazer, is chosen as the leader of the "brains" tribe. Jeff asks the leaders to decide who is the weakest of their groups. L.J. calls out Morgan, saying "this game in the beginning is all physical challenges." L.J. then tells us he trusts "cute" more than he trusts "hot," and he thinks Morgan is "hot." Sarah calls out Trish, a pilates trainer, as the weakest. Trish was one of the first to speak up for Sarah as the leader. David chooses Garrett, who, by all appearances, might be the strongest player on the tribe. David tells us it was Garrett's "formidable combination" of brains and physicality would have been tough to beat.
Jeff explains that the three chosen "weakest" players will be taken by helicopter to their beaches early to make an important decision on behalf of their tribes. They're not kicked out of the game or the tribe, and are suddenly in a mysteriously powerful position. Jeff sends the tribes off to find their beaches.
Garrett is upset that David so quickly chose him. He gets dropped at the Luzon camp. He sees a note that says he can either help himself, by taking a clue to a hidden immunity idol, or help his tribe and get a second bag of rice. Garrett takes the clue and goes off to find the idol. Garrett, a professional high-stakes poker player, tells us he wants David out of the game.
Trish lands at her Appari tribe's camp. She thinks about taking the idol, but decides to help the group and pass on the idol.
Morgan says she was surprised to get pointed out first and she heads out to find the idol.
Back at Luzon, Garrett is struggling to find the idol at first, but reaches into some water and pulls it out.
Morgan is climbing some rocks poking around for the idol as her tribe shows up.
Morgan realizes it's obvious what she was doing, but she realizes she could lie and tell them she had a choice as to which supplies they could have at camp. L.J. thinks she is "way too calm and collected," and suspects she already has a clue or the idol. Brice says he's "no dummy" and knows she's "a woman scorned." He goes and chats her up a little to make a connection.
The beauty tribe gets a fire going pretty quickly, already intent to prove they can do things beyond just being good looking.
Trish warmly welcomes her tribe mates and immediately tells Sarah she holds no grudges. Tony tells us he appreciates Trish's move, but if it was his choice to make, he's have the idol in his pocket.
Woo tells Cliff he has a few of his basketball cards. Cliff tells everyone the NBA teams he played for. Tony, meanwhile, lies to Sarah about his being a cop. She is a cop, and she tells us there's something about Tony she doesn't trust.
At the brains tribe, Spencer tells us he thought David was "an idiot" for ostracizing Garrett. J'Tia, a nuclear engineer, calls out the plan for putting the shelter together. She tells everyone what to do and starts calling out orders. Tasha, an accountant, says JTia is coming off confrontational and bossy. J'Tia's approach is turning her tribe mates off quickly. The shelter platform falls apart.
Immunity challenge: The teams are playing for immunity. The first two teams to finish get it, and the first team gets a full fire-making kit. The second team to finish gets flint.
The tribes have to fish some keys off of tall hooks to unlock and collect trunks and put them onto a cart. They have to then take the cart apart, put it and the trunks through an obstacle wall, then put the cart back together, take the trunks to the end of the course, then open the trunks and use the puzzle pieces to put together a puzzle.
brawn works well together, beauty follows closely, but the brains tribe is way behind. Jeff calls the brains tribe's performance one of the worst in the history of "Survivor" out of the gate.
brawn and beauty are neck and neck as the brains tribe starts to put the puzzle together. Beauty comes back and wins immunity and the full fire-making kit. brawn follows closely behind. The brains tribe isn't even close and will go to Tribal Council.
Back at the brains camp, everyone laments their performance. Tasha tells us they were "dumb."
Kass and David go off and talk, and David continues to make the case for voting Garrett out. Kass isn't having it and says she wants to vote J'Tia out. Kass and J'Tia go off and talk, and Kass tells J'Tia straight out that she is going to vote for her and tells her "it's time to scramble a little bit." Kass tells J'Tia she hasn't been pulling her weight. J'Tia cries while telling us that her feelings are hurt.
Tasha tells J'Tia that her actions during the building of the shelter came off badly. Garrett comes and tells J'Tia and Tasha that they should vote David out. J'Tia makes a case for herself being "bossy" but "loyal." Garrett says he'll talk to Spencer. He does, and Spencer starts asking Garrett (who has an idol) if he's heard anything about an idol clue. Spencer says he's concerned that David has an idol. He thinks it's safer to vote J'Tia out.
Tribal Council: Garrett jumps up when a spider starts crawling on his leg.
J'Tia immediately tells Jeff that she's the one up for the vote. She admits that her plan for the shelter didn't work and laughs about it. Kass pats her on the leg, while smiling.
Jeff asks David about calling Garrett out as the weakest person in the tribe. Garrett says that "sucked." Jeff asks David is Garrett is "OK" feeling confident about his position, and David says "yes -- for now."
J'Tia says they need to make decisions based on the first part of the game, not the end, referring to David's decision to call Garrett out as the weakest. Spencer says "you have to kind of go with the people you trust."
The vote: David writes down J'Tia's name, saying, "In the real world, I may hire you, but in this world, not tonight." J'Tia writes down David's name.
Jeff asks if anyone has the hidden immunity idol and Garrett coughs, which seems to catch Spencer's attention.
Jeff reads the votes: J'Tia, David, J'Tia, David, David, and the first person voted out is David. He gets up, muttering, "Unbelievable."
David's last words: "I have no regrets. I played the way I thought I needed to play to get forward in the game, but the tribe just doesn't have it together -- or they have it together, just against me. But, no hard feelings to any of them. I consider myself pretty much the luckiest person in the world."
