Barbie Mariposa & The Fairy Princess is the 25th CGI-animated Barbie movie that released on August 27, 2013. The movie is a sequel to Barbie: Mariposa and her Butterfly Fairy Friends, and the fifth film in the Barbie Fairytopia series. The theme song of the film is "Be A Friend", performed by Alana Hyland.

Mariposa and Willa are flying around Flutterfield when Zee runs into Mariposa, telling her that Queen Marabella wants to speak to her. They go, where the Queen asks Mariposa what she knows about the Crystal Fairies. Mariposa explains, but Lord Gastrous tells the Queen that Mariposa did not mention that the Crystal Fairies are their enemies, saying that they are mean and horrible. Mariposa states that she disagrees, and Lord Gastrous takes that as proof she is misinformed. Willa also believes it, saying that everyone knows the Crystal Fairies are "mean and cruel." Mariposa tells her that it's only because it's what they're led to believe, because it's in the fairytales. Mariposa reads from a book on the history of Butterfly and Crystal Fairies, and afterward tells them that everything said bad about them are just stories. Queen Marabella agrees, saying that 'research and not stores' is what the decision should be based in, and appoints Mariposa as the Royal Ambassador, and says that she is to go to Shimmervale to make peace. But Mariposa refuses and flies away.

Later, Prince Carlos spots Mariposa reading with Zee sleeping, whom wakes up upon Carlos' arrival, and Carlos asks her why she didn't want to go. Mariposa tells Carlos that she isn't 'ambasador material.' He gives Mariposa a Flutter Flower, telling her it will remind her of home, so Mariposa agrees. She and Willa help pack her bag, with trouble because of so many books whereas she's also including her clothes, but eventually get it locked up. Mariposa leaves for Shimmervale with Zee, camping in a cave and flying through flowers, reading.

Mariposa reads that she has to wait at the meeting spot. When they get there, nobody is there, except Talayla. Talayla is scared of them at first and hides, but when she is informed by Mariposa that they won't hurt her, she is cheerful and happy as she shows Mariposa around.

The residents hide and shut their windows as they fly past, making Mariposa feel uncomfortable. During the tour, Catania introduces herself through her window, but they both talk for a minute, because Catania is ordered to stay away and shut the window. During that first meeting, before the order, Talayla kept flying, thinking Mariposa and Zee were still following her. When Talayla finds them outside Catania's window, she takes and shows Mariposa the room that she decorated to be 'just like your home,' with weeds, thorns and dark decor. After that, Mariposa meets the king and Catania formally.

Mariposa remembers Catania and says 'hey.' The king is outraged, but Catania tells him that 'hey' in Flutterfield is a sign of great respect. Meanwhile, Carlos and Willa, who have been put in charge of looking after the royal library while Mariposa is away, are struggling, as a shipment of books arrive while both are away. 

King Regellius invites Mariposa and Zee to a royal tea with himself, Anu and Catania. Mariposa embarasses herself, as her wings cause a lot of trouble, so the King asks her to sit far away from the table.

In a dark lair, Gwyllion and her sidekick, Boris, have just perfected her magic spell that will change a crystal into a dark rock.

In the morning, Talayla invites Mariposa to meet the residents of Shimmervale, with King Regellius and Catania, but when they arrive to meet the residents, they are all in hiding. 

Carlos is painting a tapestry, finishing his mother's dress, announcing that spending two years in art school was not a waste of time like Queen Marabella had thought. When Willa comes in as a tour guide, one of them spills a smoothie over Carlos' picture of his mother. The fairies on the tour are annoyed at Willa's lack of knowledge and demand a refund. 

The next morning, Talayla asks Mariposa to try on a dress, as that is what she will be wearing for the annual Crystal Ball. She goes to find King Regellius to ask if she can address the subjects and tell them that the Butterfly Fairies want to send their best wishes to the Crystal Fairies. King Regellius accepts, but after a mishappening, tells Mariposa harshly that her large wings are a menace, as she is continuously knocking things over with them, and asks her if she could do anything about them. Mariposa comes up with an idea, and so instead wears her wings as a dress. He tells her to "keep them that way."

Gwyllion finds out about the Crystal Ball, tells Boris that patience is a virtue and tells Boris to sharpen his claws, as they will be leaving for Shimmervale to attack that night. Mariposa finds her room changed, full of color and flowers, and finds out that Catania decorated it. They talk about their favorite books together, as they both enjoy reading. She shows Mariposa her favorite place to read, at the Heartstone.

Mariposa suggests they go to the GlowWater Falls after Catania says that she hasn't been there in many years. They have lots of fun together and Catania starts to open up to Mariposa, explaining that when she was eight-years-old, Gwyllion asked her father for one crystal. King Regellius refused, as he is afraid that there wouldn't be enough for his own people if he gave them out to others all the time. Gwyllion gets mad and uses a spell to stick his and his guard's feet to the ground. She then takes Catania up to the top of GlowWater Falls and drops her, as King Regellius had freed himself and especially from Boris, and whom has knocked Gwyllion's magical staff. King Regellius catches Catania before she could fall in the water, but her wings were broken, but even after they healed, she had never flown since.

Then, Catania gives Mariposa a crystal necklace. At first, Maripoaa refuses, but eventually she takes it. Mariposa then gives her new friend the Flutter Flower that Prince Carlos had given her. They remember that it is time for the Crystal Ball and rush off to get ready. Talayla tells Mariposa that, even though she is wearing the dress she gave her, she isn't ready, so she whistles for small fairies to shimmerize her, which in Flutterfield is called 'befluttering.' After, they go the ball.

Mariposa puts her wings down as a dress and Talayla asks her how she can dance like that, when Catania appears on Sophie. They dance on the ground and soon the other residents of Shimmervale join her, now that they are not afraid of the strange Butterfly Fairy. After dancing, one of them notices the crystal necklace around Mariposa's neck, another then implies she must have stolen it. Another warns of her fire breath.

The King then yells at Mariposa to leave. "The ballroom?" Mariposa asks, but he tells her that he means that she is banished from Shimmervale. Mariposa returns the crystal necklace and goes her way. Catania is mad at her father and flies off on Sophie, with Anu following. The King is disappointed because he caused Catania to be upset.

Right before she flies back home, she notices Gwyllion. She uses her magic staff to turn every crystal in Shimmervale to rock simultaneously. She then has every Crystal Fairy freeze into place, says to King Regellius that she'll show them the same mercy he had show her, and then places her attention on the Heartstone. Mariposa tries to stop her, but Gwyllion freezes her into place. Zee and Anu try to stop her, but Boris chases them. Because Mariposa can't defeat Gwyllion anymore, Catania is worried, and then finds herself in mid-air, her wings flapping. Catania decides that she must do it herself, and grabs the staff. At hearing Gwyllion say that she won't stop her this time, Catania moves away in fear, which causes Gwyllion to fall back and fall down, because she wasn't ready and didn't know Catania would stop fighting her. The staff comes crashing down and breaks on the ground.

Although the Heartstone is now black and hard, she notices that the Flutter Flower in her pocket is glowing. They hold it close to it and every crystallite is restored. Both of their dresses and hair are now transformed. They all go to King Regellius, who notices that she is flying and compliments her beautiful wings. He thanks them both and wants to destroy Gwyllion, but Catania tells him to remember what caused the problem: all she asked for was just one crystallite, and he said "no." She also tells him that it not at all gives her the right to destroy them, and that destroying her isn't right either. Righting a wrong and giving her the crystal necklace, Gwyllion is softened up in heart and surprised that she would be forgiven after everything she has done. Gwyllion's dress and hair transforms and now she looks like a kind old woman. Boris is unhappy with her new look, but leaves with her anyway, with Gwyllion explaining that she has a 'lot of thinking to do.'

King Regellius asks Mariposa if there's anything he can do for her. In the end, Anu and Zee dance. King Regellius gives Queen Marabella a gift of a beautiful crystal necklace and the two kingdoms are now friends. He asks her to dance and she agrees. Mariposa and Catania show Prince Carlos and Willa what their wings could do if folded down, and they all laugh. Catania says that she had never seen King Regellius' face so red, with Talayla saying she had. Mariposa asks Willa and Carlos how the library went and Willa says that it went smoothly. The angry tour group chases after her.

After Catania and Talayla leave Mariposa and Carlos, he asks her for a dance. Willa flies down to where Catania and Talayla are, watching Mariposa dance beautifully with Carlos. Lord Gastrous has a change of thinking on the Crystal Fairies. Catania, Willa and Talayla make him dance with them. The movie ends with Zee and Anu together.
