The series follows Mr Church, played by David Walliams, a chemistry teacher in a secondary school that falls for new French teacher Miss Postern, played by Catherine Tate. However the new teacher is getting attention from many of her peers, most notably Mr Gunn, played by Philip Glenister and Mr Barber - a depressive geography teacher, often the target of student pranks - played by Steve Speirs. The programme follows the comedic relationships of the teachers during the day-to-day running of the school. The head teacher of the school, played by Frances de la Tour, attempts to keep the peace - but that's not easy in this school.
