The Japanese anime production studio PA Works has released the first preview trailer for its upcoming summer Japanese anime series called “Uchouten Kazoku” which is a mix of mystery, supernatural, and fantasy which is seemingly set in modern day Kyoto, Japan. Crunchyroll reports on the current cast attached to do the voices while Anime News Network gives an explanation of the anime's story plot. Uchouten Kazoku is due to air on TV networks across Japan on July 7.
In Uchouten Kazoku, the anime imagines a world (let alone Kyoto) where humans coexist with the tanuki (shape-shifting raccoon dogs) and tengu (bird-like goblins). These three groups are not isolated from each other; in fact, these three groups mingle with each other. Uchouten Kazoku focuses on the Shimogamo family who are tanuki. You have Yasaburo Shimogamo, the second middle son of the family, who is able to assume the physical form of a high school girl; Yajiro Shimogomo, the first middle son of the family, who can change into a frog; and you have many others. Also part of the main cast is a human girl, with psychic powers, named Benten.
Anime News Network reports that Uchouten Kazoku is the first work by Tomihiko Morimi that is not based off of one of his manga titles. This is Morimi's first strictly anime work.
