Painfully slow coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Cherie Chan) and three consecutive summers during her youth that set in motion the inner workings of her soul, or something like that. Three Summers comes with some high expectations, as it was produced and written by Sylvia Chang, and features Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Veronica Yip and Wu Chien-Lien. Unfortunately, the film itself doesn't cohere into anything more than a well-meaning, but unnecessary drama. Leung and Yip turn in charismatic yet empty performances, and there are some moments which echo the pain and insecurity of growing up. At the same time, the film detours into questionably relevant darkness and subplots which seem almost tangential. On the whole, Three Summers can be a mild diversion, but those seeking more (as I did) will likely be unimpressed.
